Seas the day…

One of my favorite getaways is to the Jersey shore. My home base when I travel there is Sea Isle City. It takes a little over an hour to get there by car from Center City. From there, Avalon and Stone Harbor are a brief drive over the Townsend’s Inlet Bridge or you can travel just 20 minutes up north to walk the boardwalks at Ocean City.

Sea Isle City was founded by Charles Landis in the 1800s. Inspired by his travels to Venice, Italy, he wanted the town to be a thriving seaside destination. In the 1800s, you could take a train directly into Sea Isle. Trolleys, led by horses and mules, transported passengers up and down the length of Sea Isle, from Corson’s Inlet to Townsend’s Inlet. The Jitney shuttle now takes visitors up and down the island for less than 5 dollars.

One of the places that has the best seafood in Sea Isle is Carmen’s. Established in 1980, the restaurant started out as a seafood market owned and operated by husband and wife Carmen and Ruthy Conti in 1970. The restaurant is located on the bay and anywhere you sit, you have a view of the water.

Fish Alley, where Carmen’s and other great seafood restaurants are located, commemorates Sea Isle’s once thriving fishing industry. Fish and other seafood were caught, packed and shipped to destinations like Philadelphia and New York City.

A picture of my shrimp appetizer, seasoned generously with Old Bay seasoning. It was SO good!
